Remembering Dr. King

the-victors-gym-blog-martin-luther-king-day

Today, as we inaugurate our 44th President, Barack Obama, for his second term, we also remember the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.  Today, the dream that was shared 50 years ago on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial has come full circle.  A dream to unify people of all colors.  A dream to live, love and appreciate each other as brothers and sisters.  A dream to look past the exterior and see people for who they really are.

The celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is one of my favorite holidays as it recognizes a man who wasn’t afraid to fight for what he believed in.  He was a gentle leader who made a strong impact on our nation’s history.  Below is an incredible timeline created by Allison Morris highlighting MLK’s milestones and achievements.  I hope it inspires you as much as it inspired me.

An Award and A Giveaway!

It’s a bright and shiny day here at InHerChucks.com.  Once again I am feelin’ the blog love and I’m smiling from ear to ear.  Liz from Family Foodie Survival Guide and April from Daily Frosting both surprised me with nominations for the Sunshine Blogger’s Award.  This award is special because it is given to “bloggers who positively and creatively inspire others in the blogosphere”.  Wow!  That puts a little pep in my step :)  Thank you ladies for honoring me with this award.  The feeling is mutual.  Liz, your passion for eating healthy, local and fresh inspires me to eat well.  Thank you for spreading the word on the truth about good food.  April, your ability to relay stories which include humor, life lessons and truth is beautifully eloquent.  Thank you for being the daily frosting on the cupcake of my day :)

Now on to my award responsibilities.  Once I have linked back to the people who presented me with the award, I need to answer a list of questions.  So here is goes…

1.  Favorite Number: 9

2.  Favorite Nonalcoholic Drink:  Iced Tea

3.  Facebook of Twitter:  Facebook.  I have yet to create an account on Twitter, although I have been told that I need to.  So stayed tuned :)

4.  My Passion: Helping others

5.  Favorite Pattern:  Damask

6.  Favorite Day of the Week:  Wednesday

7.  Favorite Flower:  Any flowers that my husband gives me :)

And now it is my pleasure to pass this award on to 10 more bloggers.  So in alphabetical order, the nominees are…

1.  The Accidental Pumpkin:  As a CSA subscriber for the past two years, there have been many times where I felt in need of a handbook.  Now, thanks to CSA Survival Tips by The Accidental Pumpkin, CSA subscribers are able to maximize their produce and face the CSA challenge with confidence.  If only I would have found this blog sooner…

2.  Almanac of Eats:  Thanks to Steff Deschenes, I have learned, that everyday is a holiday!  In her attempt to eat whatever the National Food Holiday is, readers are introduced to new recipes, products, and restaurants.  And with days like National Chocolate Pudding Day…I can get used to these kinds of celebrations :)

3.  Food. Fun. Life.:  Mikelle’s food makes me happy.  From Rainbow Swirl Cookies to Meatloaf “Cake” my tummy and imagination are satisfied.  Her food is healthy and delicious but still has enough spunk to get you and your family excited to sit down for a meal together.  Now if I could only decide which recipe to make first…

4.  Have Dessert First:  Anyone who suggests I eat dessert first is a winner in my book.  But with meals like Grilled Fish Tacos and Shrimp Summer Rolls I have to admit, I am finding it hard to deny my main course.  Not only does Novagirl offer mouth-watering recipes, but she posts nutrition facts for each recipe.  So now you can have your cake and eat it too!

5.  Me and Monster:  A mother to an adorable toddler, Lynn uses her blog to document her little monster’s milestones, life as a stay at home mom, and the joys of raising and child.  I love the way Lynn tells her stories with a humorous tone.  Take this post for example…chances are if you have ever mothered a toddler, you have become familiar with the no pants party :)

6.  No Giving Up Now:  A newly single dad, Michael writes about everything from his kids sporting events, to dinner prep successes.  I enjoy following his journey as he learns how to adjust to this new life of his.  What inspires me most about his content is his “never give up” attitude.  His positivity and determination are infectious.

7.  Pink and Green Mama:  A stay at home mom to two adorable little girls, bored is not a word that exists in MaryLea‘s vocabulary.  Whenever I need a craft idea, I turn to this blog.  There are so many amazing ideas, it’s hard to know where to start.  I made this for Father’s Day and it was a huge hit!  I am inspired daily by the ongoing creativity that is Pink and Green Mama!

8.  Real Food, Real Deals:  Feeding your family real food on a budget is no longer a myth thanks to Annemarie.  With recipes that are easy to follow, using food that is affordable and fresh, Annemarie creates dishes that are tasty and appealing to the entire family.  I mean, who’s gonna pass up a fresh baked Chocolate Zucchini Bite?

9.  Sybaritica:  Nothing inspires me more than people who try something new.  C. John Thompson of Sybaritica not only loves to cook but he loves to experiment with his food.  From Jellyfish and Cabbage Salad to Chocolate Dripped Cape Gooseberries his blog posts are always raising the bar on the age-old question…”What’s for dinner?”.

10.  Unschooled Locavore:  With a passion for all things local, Mason inspires me to stay close to home.  A foodie with a mission to cook and eat food that he can trace back to its roots, Mason has created some killer meals with his local produce.  Rhubar-b-q Pizza anyone?  And with a resource page that features local products, Mason is making a difference, one blog post at a time.

In Remembrance…

Seven weeks ago my brother, a First Lieutenant in the United States Army, completed his year long deployment in Afghanistan. Our family was so grateful and relieved to have him return home safe and sound.  But some soldier’s and their families, weren’t as fortunate.

Memorial Day, celebrated on the last Monday of May, is a day in which we salute and honor those who gave their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces.  As an American, and a family member with multiple soldiers in my family, including my Uncle Joe (an Army Ranger), and my Uncle John (who served in the navy), I am extremely appreciative for the sacrifices that they made.  But, I can’t imagine what it would feel like to lose a family member to war.  Unfortunately, for many, this happens all too often.

As many people will be celebrating Memorial Day with cook-outs, pool parties and bargain shopping, I hope we can set aside a few moments to remember those who gave their all for our safety, our freedom and our country.  We salute you…

Musical Mondays: The Magic of Music

“The magic of music warms the heart and soothes the soul”

Today’s Musical Monday is a bit different from the norm.  However, the message is still the same.  Instead of focusing on the wonderful benefits of music for our younger ones, we turn to the other end of the spectrum and celebrate the magic of music for the more seasoned adults in our lives.

I was so fortunate to grow up in a musical family.  I began singing on commercials when I was three, started piano lessons when I was four, and in my teen years picked up the guitar.  My parents were always supportive of my passion for music and shared the joy of making music together.  But my appreciation for music ran deeper than the beautiful sounds and tones emitted.  From an early age, I was exposed to the true magic of music and it’s ability to impact people’s lives.

I first witnessed the magic of music during a visit to see my Uncle Ted.  Uncle Ted had Alzheimer’s Disease and his condition made it difficult for my Aunt Ruth to care for him at home so he was moved into a skilled nursing facility where his needs could be properly met.  One day my family and I went to see him to help celebrate his 50th wedding anniversary.  We met in the dining hall, which had been decorated with streamers, banners and balloons.  Uncle Ted was all dressed up in a tuxedo t-shirt and his best pair of pants.  But as handsome as he looked, Uncle Ted wasn’t the same person I had remembered him to be.  He was seemingly lifeless and could barely talk.  He wouldn’t make eye contact and wasn’t at all interested in the festivities that were going on around him.

After some yummy cake and refreshments, my dad sat down at the piano to play Uncle Ted and Aunt Ruth’s special song, “Moonlight Serenade“.  This song was significant to them because it was the tune that won him Aunt Ruth’s heart when he came home from World War II.  As the music began to play Uncle Ted became overwhelmed with emotional.  He was crying tears of joy.  He got up and began to dance with Aunt Ruth as he hummed along with the melody.  It was as if someone went over and turned on a light switch inside Uncle Ted.  The magic of music had brought him back to life, even if it was just for a short while.

Once the party was over and things were cleaned up, we walked Uncle Ted back to his room to say goodbye.  The excitement of the party and the music had worn off by now and he reverted back to a quite, expressionless and disconnected man.

On the ride home from our visit with Uncle Ted, my dad was reminded of when we used to visit his mom, whom we called Nanny, in her nursing home.  My nanny was also diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and lived in a private home with six other women and a staff to attend to her needs.  Upon arrival my Nanny would normally be sitting in a chair in the living room with her chin rested on her chest.  We would greet her but she would never even acknowledge that we were there.  But then my dad would begin to sing the hymns that he grew up singing with her at church, and like magic she would come alive.  She would chime in, singing each and every lyric in perfect harmony (she was a soprano).  And then, as quickly as she perked up, when the song was over, she would shut down and put her chin back on her chest and drift away.

A few days ago, I came across this video on YouTube.  It was the inspiration for my post.  It is a visual example of the stories that I have just shared with you.  This video makes me happy, it beings me joy and it gives me hope.

I believe music is a universal language.  One that has the ability to cross all barriers, including obstacles that seem impenetrable.  It can evoke emotion, resurrect memory and construct passageways that allow for loving reunion.  I am extremely grateful for the gift of music and its magical effects on all of us.

The Liebster Award

My whole life I have been a self-starter.  I have a competitive spirit but mostly with myself.  I always set the bar high and reach for the stars.  I like to think that I don’t need someone to pat me on the back and tell me I did a good job, but when it happens, it sure does feel good :)

Last week I received a post on my Facebook page that read: “Hey, I’ve nominated ‘In Her Chucks’ for a Liebster Blog Award”.  The message came from Anna at Piper’s Run, a blog about being a mom, a wife, working out and many more things.  I was extremely honored by the gesture and couldn’t wait to find out what the Liebster Award was all about.

After reading a bit more about the award on Anna’s blog, I learned that the Liebster Award is given to bloggers who have inspired their peers through their work.  The award takes its name from the German word meaning “beloved, dearest or favorite”.  Wow!  That definitely put a smile on my face :D.  As I read more, I found out that not only do I get to accept this award, but I get to pass it on to 5 more blogs that inspire me.  So in alphabetical order, here are the top 5 blogs that motivate me.

1.  Changing my Destiny:  If you are looking for some wonderful ideas on how to makeover your life, look no further than Addison’s Blog.  She writes about everything from DIY crafts and projects to weekly meal planning and grocery shopping.  My favorite series is her Eco Challenge.  For the month of March she promised to try one eco tip a day to move herself in the direction of being more eco conscious.  And she is inspiring her readers to do the same, including me.  Some of her suggestions include starting a garden, joining a CSA, and trying this most amazing new shower head.  Thank you Addison for teaching us all how to live a little bit greener :)

2.  Damsel in Dior:  When I want to grow up, I want to be as fabulous as Jacey aka Damsel.  As a mom on the go, I rarely get the chance to dress up, do my hair or get an ounce of make up on my face, so I have decided to live vicariously through fashion blogs.  I know that sooner or later I will get the chance to take a shower for longer than 5 minutes, get the time to blow dry my hair and maybe even go shopping for a new wardrobe.  And when I do, I’m taking all of Jacey’s advice.  Her blog is fun, fashionable and fancy.  Thank you “Damsel” for keeping me up to date on what’s hip!

3.  Koko Likes:  I love Koko Likes…but probably not as much as my brother (it’s his girlfriend).  Her blog makes me smile.  Whether she is documenting her daily eats on her What I Ate Wednesday posts, sharing her favorite recipes or opening up about what it is like to be in love with a deployed soldier, Koko is always outgoing, cheerful and real.  I had toyed around with starting a blog for a while.  Unfortunately I let some fears about what to write, how people would receive it and other silly insecurities get in the way.  But after reading Koko’s blog, I was inspired to go ahead and take the plunge.  She taught me that as long as you are true to yourself, people will enjoy it.  And that was that.  So thank you Koko for setting the example of being true to yourself.  Because, there is no one else out there like you ;)

4.  Maison Interiors:  They say, home is where the heart is.  And where I can’t deny that statement, it doesn’t hurt to make that home pretty.  Audrey from Maison Interiors does just that.  As an interior designer and artist, Audrey has lots to share about how to spruce up your space.  She offers inspiration boards, DIY tutorials and links to the latest and greatest trends in interior design.  After reading her blog, you will be ready to update every room in your house to bring it up to its potential.  I’m starting with the bedroom!  Thanks Audrey for inspiring me to dwell in beauty!

5.  Zo Much Baby:  I’m pretty certain that when you look up the phrase, Super Mom in the dictionary, Jennifer’s picture will pop up.  A new mom of an adorable 10 month old boy, a full-time career woman, a PhD student a budding children’s clothing designer and a poet…this momma’s got it going on!  And she is willing to share her secrets with all of us.  Jennifer writes about everything from making a family budget, to learning how to balance your time, to the adventures of making your own baby food.  I can’t get enough of her honesty when it comes to dealing with the real life issues of raising a family.  Thank you Jennifer for inspiring me to be the best mommy I can be :)

Winners please keep the karma flowin’ and refer to the instructions below…

  1. Link back to the person who gave it to you and thank them.
  2. Post the award to your blog.
  3. Give the award to 5 bloggers with less than 200 followers that you appreciate and value (It’s a great way to get to word out there about other blogs!!)
  4. Leave a comment on the 5 blogs to let them know that they have received this award.

Congratulations to all the winners.  Keep up the good work and thank you for your daily inspiration :)

For My Love…

Seven years ago, today, I went on my first date with a fine young gentleman.  We had only just met but a feeling inside of me told me this was something special.

On our way to meet our friends for dinner and a show, I had a vision.  I could see the future, as if it were playing out right in front of me.  We were married, with a family, enjoying a partnership, a union.

Three years ago, today, my vision materialized, and I married that fine young gentleman.  We embarked on a new journey together for the rest of our lives.  Two becoming one.

And now, as we celebrate our first anniversary as a family, with our daughter, I am blown away by how far we have come.

To be honest, it can be hard to notice progress in the midst of our daily lives.  But when you take a moment to step back and reflect, you appreciate the hard work that has gotten you here.

On our wedding day, I promised my husband a priceless love.  Not a discount love, not a 2 for 1 love, not a bought it on sale love.  But an all I have love, a bankrupt love…every last drop love.

And so today, three years later, I re-pledge my love to him.  My love for him as my husband, my love for him as a father, my love for him as a man.

Freddie, in the last seven years together, you have taught me so much.  You have opened my eyes to new sights, my ears to new sounds.  I am grateful for your friendship, your partnership and your love.

Thank you for being patient with me.  Thank you for being honest with me.  Thank you for being real.

This has been one heck of a journey.  And it ain’t over yet.  Three years down, a lifetime to go.

Happy Valentines Day!  Happy Anniversary!

I love you.

xoxo

Words of Wisdom

Today was a lovely little Saturday.

It began at around 9 am when I awoke to a snuggly baby who was enjoying sleeping in late with me.  I wish I could have stayed there all day but I had to get up and get ready for my 10am photography class.

Freddie had signed me up for this class as part of my Christmas gift.  I had a great time learning how to use all the bells and whistles on my camera.  I was grateful that the class was held outside because then I could enjoy the amazing weather (70 degrees in February ain’t too bad!).

I got out of class a little early and was able to make it home before Harper left for her swim lesson.  I was happy I didn’t miss it as it is a fun family activity that I look forward to weekly.

When we got home, I ran to the market to pick up a few ingredients to make dinner.  While I was gone, Harper stayed home with her daddy and enjoyed a play date with our friends and neighbors.

At around 5pm, our friends came over for dinner.  Freddie and I love having company over.  It’s always fun to hang out, eat some good food and share stories.

Soon after they left, it was time for Harper to go to bed.  Once she was off in dream land, Freddie and I worked on planning Harper’s party.  We are so excited to celebrate her 1st birthday in a few weeks :)  By the time we finished, it was pretty late, and I was pretty tired.  But of course I still have so much that has to be done!  And then some words of wisdom popped into my head.

My dad loves to share lessons with me that were passed down from his dad.  He has a ton of them and he always offers them at just the right moment.  I can remember one time, while I was in the midst feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the things I had on my plate, he said, “You can do anything you want, you can’t do everything you want”.  So as much as the perfectionist in me doesn’t want to admit that this statement is true, I will surrender and accept that there is always tomorrow.  And as much as mommy hood has taught me the art of multitasking, I have yet to master sleeping while doing my chores.

So as I retire to my comfy bed with my loved ones who are already catching their Zs, I am grateful for a day of family, fun and friends.  And grateful for gentle words of wisdom.

Sweet dreams :)

Celebrating MLK

Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase- Martin Luther King, Jr.

Today, we commemorate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  An influential leader in the civil rights movement, he helped to fight for equality through non-violent methods, using the power of his words.  Although his life was cut short, his legacy lives on.

Growing up I was fortunate enough to be raised in a family that valued people for who they were.  Different skin color, religious beliefs and sexual orientations were acknowledged and appreciated, but labels were irrelevant.  Celebrating our differences and learning from each other is what life is all about.  I am grateful to be able to pass this lesson on to my daughter.

What I admire most about Dr. King is that he had the courage to stand up for what he believed in, regardless of the obstacles that stood in his way.  He understood that in order for change to happen, he had to be proactive, and used faith as a motivator to accomplish his goals.  I am grateful for his ongoing influence in our world and honor him for his works.

Another Blogging Milestone

As 2011 comes to a close, I am grateful for all the incredible moments in which I have had the pleasure to experience.  Top on my list is of course the birth of my little girl.  I couldn’t imagine my life without her.  It’s hard to believe that this time last year she was snuggled up in my tummy, marinating away.

Since the birth of my daughter, my life has continued to evolve and change.  After nearly 15 years of working in the field of social work, serving people with developmental disabilities, I decided to become a stay at home mom.  As much as I cherish each day with my daughter, I was looking for an outlet that would allow me to connect with others.  Blogging is the perfect answer to fulfill this need.  Yet when I began, I had no idea how wonderful this experience would be.

Having the opportunity to share my thoughts and feelings daily is rewarding in itself.  Getting feedback from my friends, family and fellow bloggers is icing on the cake.  Yesterday I awoke to yet another unexpected surprise.  Heather Gioia, of oohgioia, nominated me for the Versatile Blogger Award.

Receiving this type of recognition from a fellow blogger is a huge honor.  So thank you Heather for your support and encouragement.  This is a wonderful way to end 2011 and get geared up for 2012.

Along with this nomination, comes a few responsibilities besides acknowledging the blogger who nominated you.  The first is to nominate 15 more bloggers and make them aware of their nomination.  So without further ado, here are my nominations for the Versatile Blogger Award in alphabetical order:

1.  Anything But Academia: A full-time doctoral student, Sarah uses her blog as a creative outlet and a way to find balance in the midst of reading, writing and studying.  I got hooked on her blog after checking out all of her healthy and delicious food posts.  A lover of fresh produce herself, Sarah and her husband are always cooking up something yummy.

2.  The Dating Divas:  Having a baby is wonderful.  But finding the balance between being a mother and being a wife can be challenging sometimes.  The Dating Divas offer a ton of creative and inexpensive date night ideas to help keep your marriage fun and exciting.

3.  Diaper Free…The Other Side of the Moon:  As a mother who practices Elimination Communication (EC) in a society full of diapers, there are times when you can feel alone.  Therefore I was extremely grateful to have this blogger reach out to me on my first EC post and share her support.  I found her blog which offers tips and tricks on EC to be very helpful and often refer other moms to her blog that are looking for more information on EC.

4.  Happiness, From the Ground Up:  They say a picture is worth a thousand words.  Jenn’s blog is a perfect example of this statement.  Over the last year Jenn has been documenting her days through photo posts.  And in some ways, it’s the best reading I have done in a while.  Her pictures put you in the moment and allow for your mind to create the dialogue that goes along with the whimsical images.  A great idea I hope to try one day.

5.  happyfoodbaby:  When your subtitle is “because everyone’s happier with food in their tummy” you’re a winner in my book.  happyfoodbaby always delivers original, creative and mouth water recipes that make your tummy jump for joy!  From Coconut and Oatmeal Soup to Lamb Tagine with Apricots, Almonds and Mint, there is never a dull moment in happyfoodbaby’s kitchen.

6.  Heather’s Dish:  There’s no secret that I am a sucker for yummy food.  Heather’s blog is chock-full of delicious dish after delicious dish.  Plus, as a pregnant mom-to-be who was recently diagnosed with gestational diabetes, she is a great resource for healthy food options that fit the GD diet.

7. Indulge- Travel, Adventure, & New Experiences:  Close your eyes and think of your most outrageous adventure.  Chances are Lesley has been there, done that.  As someone who likes to stay close to home, I have found myself living vicariously through her travels.  A recently pregnant mommy-to-be, Lesley now offers useful baby product reviews as she navigates through the craziest adventure that is registering for baby goods.

8. Koko Likes:  If you have ever wondered what life is like as a military girlfriend, look no further than Koko Likes.  Documenting the emotional roller coaster of having her soldier over seas, Koko shares her sincere thoughts and feelings with honesty and humility.  At the same time, Koko’s blog is a wonderful resource for everything food.  From mouth-watering recipes to detailed restaurant reviews, Koko’s got you covered.  (Full disclosure:  Koko is my sister-in-law to be, but that had nothing to do with my decision…her blog ROCKS!)

9.  Naturallymum’s Blog:  A mother of two who is choosing to raise her children using natural parenting methods shares her experiences with breastfeeding and baby led weaning among other topics.  What moved me the most about her posts is that she has the courage to do what she believes is best for her children, despite what her friends and family have to say.  Raising your children using alternative parenting methods can feel lonely at times, but connecting with naturallymum has been a rewarding relationship that has reaped wonderful benefits.

10.  Never Say Never, Baby:  I wish I was hip to the blogging world while I was pregnant with Harper.  There are so many wonderful mommy-to-be bloggers that offer a slew of helpful information that would have come in handy.  Krissy’s blog is one of them.  She documents her pregnancy through weekly posts that provide good insight on what to expect from day-to-day.

11.  Peas and Crayons:  A military bride who loves art and food, Jennifer creates a virtual sketchbook and cookbook rolled into one.  Her weekly post What I Ate Wednesday  is a virtual food party, where bloggers all around the world post their daily eats.  It’s a fun way to celebrate food and get a little bit of inspiration to spark some radical cravings.

12.  Savory Simple:  When I grow up, I want to make fancy food like Savory Simple.  Her food is chic and her photos are divine.  When I am not drooling over her recipes, I am learning all I need to know about cooking from her Kitchen Glossary.  So if you have always dreamed about eating Butter Poached Lobster with Steel-Cut Oat Risotto and have no clue what albumin is, check out this blog and put your mind at ease.

13.  Skinnytaste:  Pick your favorite naughty food indulgence and Gina will offer you a healthy version of it…and it will be delicious!  Gina is an inspiration to me for many reasons.  But as far as blogging goes, she left her full-time job a few years back to focus her efforts on her blog and has seen the fruits of her labor blossom.  Sounds like a dream come true…kind of like her Low Fat Strawberry No-Bake Cheesecake!

14.  A Sweet Pea Chef:  If you ever wondered what happens when you google mashed sweet potatoes, make sure you have some extra time on your hands.  You might stumble upon this lovely blog, in which case you will be sitting over the computer for hours drooling over all of Lacey’s amazing dishes.  Not only are her recipes to die for, but she also offers helpful tips in her Cooking 101 series.

 15.  Your Vegan Girlfriend:  Although I could never imagine myself going vegan, if I ever did, this blog would be my bible.  With tons of delicious vegan recipes for everything from burgers to brownies, Arielle’s dishes are sure to tickle your fancy.  In addition to offering treats you can make at home, Arielle also does a great job of reviewing vegan restaurants in Los Angeles and New York City.
The final step of the Versatile Blogger Award nomination is to list 7 random facts about yourself…so here we go:
1.  My favorite color is blue.
2.  I have a slight addiction to reality shows (especially those that air on Bravo)
3.  I am afraid of the dark…seriously!
4.  I organize my closet by color.
5.  I am a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta, a historically black sorority.
6.  I get excited about purchasing Kleenex…because the designs on the boxes make me happy : )
7.  I love to sleep in…something that doesn’t happen much these days.
As we enter into 2012, I extend my gratitude to all my readers.  Thank you for participating in this journey with me.  May your new year be filled with lots of love and tons of laughter!  Happy New Year!
