13 Months

Harper is on the fast track and I keep wishing I could freeze time. Harper is becoming a little girl. I realized the other day, when I was spending time with some 5 month olds, that Harper is no longer a baby, she is emerging as a toddler. But regardless of her age, she will ALWAYS be my baby…

Harper’s Firsts:

First Harvest: Harper loves to work in the garden. Five months after planting our first round of crops, we harvested a ton of fresh lettuce which we shared with our friends and neighbors. After picking our lettuce, Harper helped us plant our summer and spring crops. She did a great job!

First Theme Park Visit: Last weekend we took a road trip to San Diego to visit my sister and her family. On Saturday we all went to LEGOLAND for the day. We had a blast! Although the park is more for older kids than children Harper’s age, there was an area called DUPLO Playtown where Harper rode a train, played on the playground and built towers with Legos. I was very impressed by our visit to LEGOLAND and can’t wait to take Harper back when she gets a little older.

First Steps: Within the last few weeks, Harper has started taking steps. For the first couple days it was only 1 or 2 steps at a time. Now, she is up to 6-7, and sometimes, depending on what she is after, she may even walk a little more. This is such an exciting time as moving from crawling to walking is a pretty big milestone. When she is not walking on her own, she wants to hold on to our hands or cruise around on the furniture. It is only a matter of time until she is a full-time walker. Watch out world…here she comes!

Harper’s Favs:

Favorite Toy: After all the amazing gifts Harper received for her birthday it is hard to pick just one toy that Harper considers her favorite. But it seems that she can’t get enough of her Cozy Coupe. She loves when we push her around in it. She grabs the steering wheel with one hand, while she rests her other arm on the car door. She’s ready for her driving test already :)

Favorite Song: Twinkle, Twinkle has always been one of Harper’s all time favorite songs. It was the song we sung to her when she was still in my belly and it is the song her daddy sings to her every night when he puts her to sleep. But now that Harper is starting to sing on her own, we changed the words of the song to simple syllables. We like to sing the song using “ba” in place of the words. This way, we make the song more accessible to her because “ba” is a syllable she is familiar with. And it is a lot easier to sing “ba” than all the other words in the song. When we sing “Harper’s version” with her, she almost always sings along. And there is nothing sweeter than singing a duet with your baby girl:)

Favorite Book: For Harper’s Birthday Party we gave out small, colorful, board books in everyone’s party favor boxes. Since we had a few leftover, Harper got to keep some for herself. These are by far her favorite books yet. And they are just her size. She carries them around the house and reads them out loud. It is the cutest thing ever. I love that Harper is such an avid reader.

Harper Do:

Ever since Harper was itty bitty, she has always wanted to do things by herself. So whenever she initiates a task independently, we say, “Harper do”. This has become her little nick name. Now that Harper is 13 months, there are a lot of things she likes to do by herself, but here is a short list of some new tasks she is liking to do on her own.

Brushing her teeth: Ever since we went to the dentist last month, we have been following a good dental hygiene routine. And thankfully, Harper loves it! She gets so excited when I take her tooth brush out, she can’t wait to fight cavities. Of course, she wants to do it herself and likes it when I brush my teeth along with her.

Combing her hair: Harper has always been a good sport when it comes to getting her hair done. It is definitely a task! But she is very patient and cooperative. Lately, she has wanted to help me out a bit and often takes the comb and begins to create a bouffant on her own. Quite adorable :)

Wiping her own a$$: Pardon me for the language, but if you have ever seen Big Daddy then you know why I had to go there. But seriously, whenever Harper is done using the toilet now, she reaches for the toilet paper and does her thing. Of course she still needs help from momma but watching her try to do it on her own is pretty darn cute!

Tooth Update: Harper now has 6 teeth!

Four on the top, and 2 on the bottom. Although, it looks like the bottom may be catching up soon because Harper has been chewing away on her bottom gums. Anything she can get her hands on ends up in her mouth. So here’s to a few more teeth :)

Just when I thought time couldn’t move any faster, this last month has flown by! I can’t believe how quickly Harper is growing up. I find myself looking through photos of her earlier months and watching videos of when she was just a wee little thing. It is amazing how far she has come in only 13 months. Every day is a new opportunity for her to learn and grow, and she always makes the best of it.

Happy 13th Month Birthday Ms. Harper. Mommy and Daddy love you!

You Know You Are a Crunchy Mama When…

almost every reference made in this video is totally sh*t I say!

Here is a list of my 10 favorites:

1: “Sorry if I smell like garlic, I’m trying to kick this cold”- Have you ever snuggled your baby to bed and realized they smelled like garlic bread? No? Huh…well, getting a hold of Gaia Herbs for Kids Ear Drops could help solve this problem. I recently learned about these through my friends whose babies have been battling ear infections. And they have worked wonders! For centuries garlic has been known to have anti-bacterial as well as anti-fungal and anti-parasitic properties. Mullein oil, another ingredient often found in ear drops, has an anti-viral action and also helps to work against inflammation and increases the lymphatic circulation. Make sure to consult your physician about this alternative method to conventional treatments.

2: “Who was your doula?”- Thank God for doulas! Before I got pregnant with Harper I was unfamiliar with the term, but after experiencing labor with a doula and a midwife by my side, I am a huge advocate of their work. If you or anyone you know is pregnant and expecting a baby, I would highly recommend having a doula at the birth. The support they provide both for the mother and the family is tremendous and can many times prove to be life changing. To read more on doulas, check out the DONA International site.

3: “I love the amber teething necklace“- If you have ever seen a baby with a necklace on and wondered why they are better accessorized than you, then chances are they were wearing an amber teething necklace. Amber teething necklaces are made for wearing not chewing. The Baltic amber helps to relieve teething pain. It also boasts other benefits such as boosting the immune system and offering anti-inflammatory and therapeutic properties.

4: ” Wait, I’m doing my kegels, hold on a second”- For those of us who have had the pleasure of giving birth, kegels have become our new form of exercise. And that is all I have to say about that…because divulging anymore information would be a bit TMI!

5: “I might eat the placenta, I might not”- Believe it or not, placentophagy is all the rage, in this culture anyways. But don’t worry, no ones frying it up and serving it for dinner. Or at least let me say, no one I know. However, people are dehydrating it, grinding it up, putting it in capsules and taking it in the form of a multi-vitamin. And why not? All the other mammals are doing it!

6: “48 hour water birth”- Ok, so maybe my labor wasn’t 48 hours but 31 hours is a good chunk of time too. And unfortunately I wasn’t able to have a water birth, but more on that later. I look forward to sharing my birth story with you soon.

7: “We don’t have a crib”- As we approach our one year anniversary of family cuddles, and celebrate Harper’s 1st birthday, I am still grateful that our crib was originally on back order. Not only did we save money by eventually canceling our order, but better yet, we get the chance to snuggle up to our adorable little girl every night. It doesn’t get better than that!

8: “Coconut oil, where’s the coconut oil?”- Because who needs diaper cream when there is coconut oil? And the number of uses doesn’t stop there. It is great for cradle cap, baby massage, digestion. Check out this link for the many health benefits of coconut oil for your little one.

9: “I think she’s pooping”- A day in the life of a family practicing elimination communication, is all about staying in touch with your little one’s bodily functions. Check out the above links to read more.

10: “It’s called the Business of Being Born“- I know I have mentioned this movie before, but it is a powerful display of knowledge. This movie was the turning point for me when it came to how I chose to bring my daughter into this world. I would highly recommend it to all people, but especially those who are pregnant.

To be honest, growing up, I could have never predicted I would be considered a crunchy mom, but now that I am, I couldn’t be more proud to say it…and all the other sh*t!

A Tooth!

Every morning starts off with a smile from my precious little girl.  But this morning the smile looked a little different…is that a tooth!?!  I called out to Freddie for a second opinion…Yep its a tooth!  Yay!  Harper got her first tooth!

It seems like Harper has been teething for months now.  The poor girl has been stuffing everything she can find in her mouth.  She was never really too drooly until this week though.  So this time I was sure her teeth were coming in for real.

A first tooth is a major milestone.  And I have to admit it is bittersweet.  My little girl is growing up, and its happening way too fast!  From this day forward I will no longer be greeted by a gummy smile.  The pearly whites are making their move.

Harper's Gummy Smile

Teething is a big deal.  I can’t imagine the constant discomfort and pain.  It breaks my heart to see Harper so upset when her gums are bothering her.  But I am grateful to have some excellent tools that seem to help relieve her pain.  The biggest life saver has been her Camilia drops.  I give them to her whenever she seems to start getting uncomfortable and they work immediately.  What’s great about the Camilia drops is that it is more than just a topical remedy.  It works throughout the body to help calm inflammation, irritability and pain.  We have been using these since Harper was about 4 months old, when her pre teething began.

When the majority of Harper’s discomfort seems to be in her gums, most especially this past week when her teeth were actually cutting through the skin, I kicked it up a notch and applied some Hyland’s Teething Gel which is an all natural topical solution to sooth the pain.  In addition, I have been rotating her freezable teethers in and out of the freezer so she always has something cold to chew on, which seems to help a lot.  One of her favorite teethers has been her Sophie.  It is soft and flexible and has lots of parts like ears, horns and legs for her to nibble on.

So here’s to Harper’s first tooth!  One down, and nineteen more to go :)
